Looking at a traditional crown, it might appear to be a piece of metal hammered right over the tooth. However, that’s not actually how it works. The process for dental crowns is far more complex than most people realize.
Basic Crown Process
First, our dentist trims your tooth to get rid of any damaged parts. It’s just like taking the peel off an orange! Next, Dr. Lane takes an impression to see how the tooth is supposed to fit in your bite. He uses this mold to design the “cap” outside of your mouth.
The next step is to check the fit of the finished crown. It slips over your tooth like a glove and makes it look whole again. If that looks good, Dr. Lane cements it in place.
What If Your Crown Comes Off?
If a cap pops off your tooth, you’ll notice that your tooth looks like a stubby cone. It may or may not be sensitive, but there’s no need to panic as long as it’s not causing pain.
Try to clean out the inside of your crown, checking for pieces of broken tooth. If you can, gently place it back onto your tooth. Visit your local drugstore to pick up a temporary dental cement. This will help keep your crown secure until Dr. Lane can replace it for you.
